- context is everything
- design "rules" are based on associations with real world physics
- formal and informal elements are used in combination because everything we do is more complicated than it looks
- the term design is relative (re: to each his own, architects focus on 3D forms, painters focus on 2D, etc.)
- context is always changing for one reason or another
- new approaches become possible with new technology/software/physical tools
- everyone is now familiar with design (re: most people today know how to switch fonts on MS Word)
- more options available means the more complex our job gets
- everything's becoming faster (see printing press, email, instant text messages, etc.)
